A dynamic local area
Will there be fewer lorries and more rail freight?
A maximum of 109 trains currently run on the existing line in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, including 10 to 18 freight trains. Traffic peaks south of Bordeaux.
By upgrading the existing line, a maximum of 50 freight trains (in both directions) will be able to run between Bordeaux and the Lamothe junction (in Landes), while 80 to 85 freight trains will be able to run on the new Bordeaux–Dax line. In the long term, the aim is to transfer a large proportion of the lorry congestion on the A63 motorway and the N10 north of Bordeaux to rail. There are currently 10,000 lorries a day on the Bordeaux–Spain route. The creation of the high-speed line to Spain will free up capacity to increase the share of rail freight from 3% to 18%.
